When they record the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and is faced with financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and create a new album with an entirely new producer. Lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen departs and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much needed boost.

In 1999, the band releases Mindfields and begin an extensive worldwide tour. After a few weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief break, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993. The album features a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's coverage of Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

The original members were joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.
