Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an ode to the traditional sextet style, and an even more consistent and powerful effort with a harder edge. The more edgier sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the growth of the band. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased virtuosity was reflected by the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard playing was also sharper, more complex and less akin to previous efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a brand new studio album a few months after, and went on a world tour support it. During this period, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to discover songs that hadn't been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a duo album titled Then & Now.
